Members of the NEIFF 2018 Selection Jury

NEIFF 2018 is the first edition of our festival. The selection of submitted films was undertaken by a distinguished group of jurors, in large part representing the Polish Filmmakers Association. The selection jury will nominate around 80 film productions to be included in this year's festival competition.

  • Tomasz Dettloff

    Chairman of the selection jury | Fiction | Documentary

    Graduate of film studies at the Jagiellonian University and directing at the Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television University of Silesia. Currently working as lecturer at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts of the Jagiellonian University. Author of documentary films, television shows for the National Polish Television’s theatre section as well as television documentary and docudrama series. The director's major films include: documentaries "Pan Stefan w służbie ludzkości” (2005), "Sens życia według Edwarda" (2003) and television theater shows "Szara Róża" (1997), "Spotkanie na morzem" (1994), adapted from the novel by Jadwiga Korczakowska, "Tajemnica szkolnego dzwonka" (1993) based on Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina’s prose works and the film-school exercise "Story "(1990), for which the author has been awarded on many occasions (source: sfp.org.pl).   • Jarosław Banaszek

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    Film producer, director as well as film and television screenwriter. Author of scripts for films: “Bokser” (Prawdziwe Historie -2012), "Od pełni do pełni" (2012), "Telewizja Miłość" (2004), "Tabu Polska" (2014). Short films: “Gówno pod teatrem” (2016), Deus ex machina" (2015). He directed films ("Korowód" - directing work with Jerzy Stuhr, "Od północy do północy" as assistant director), TV series ("Na wspólnej", "Majka", "Tylko miłość", "Prosto w serce", "Brzydula", "Plebania", "M jak miłość", "Wiadomości z drugiej ręki").   • Francisco Bassignana

    Selection Jury / Fiction / Documentary

    Film producer, actor, mime artist. He comes from Santiago de Chile. He studied law. After graduation, he decided to go to Europe, where he developed most of his artistic skills. He studied acting at Cuarta Pared in Spain, dance at Ives Casatti School in France, pantomime at Maximilien Decroux Academy and Corporeal Dramatic Mime School where he worked with master Marcel Marceao. During that time, he appeared in the films Le Chat Botté, produced by CNDP, and Ceux Qui M'aiment Prendront le Train directed by Patrice Cheraud. He also apeared in the play Compagnie du Renard with Michelle Galabru. While developing his acting career, he took part in street performances in many European cities. He starred in the British production Plasic Fingers, directed by David J Paradise (2016). Owner of Chilean company Krakovia Producciones which produces films and supports independent film productions in Chile, Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. His co-production credits include the documentary film WINGKAMAPU, directed by ALVARO NUÑEZ SECCHI, which you will be able to see as part of NEIFF 2018’s special screenings. strona prywatna

  • Krzysztof Brożek

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    Graduate of the Faculty of History at the Jagiellonian University and Screenwriting at the National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre in Łódź. Producer and director of documentary films, including: Gra o Nobla(2010), IN/NI (2015), Zdradzeni o świcie (2015), Historia Pana AK (2016), Gdzie jest Porozumienie Gdańskie (2017), Salwa (2018).   • Grzegorz Dryja

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    Doctor of cultural studies, film expert, screenwriter. One of the co-creators of "Encyklopedia Kina", published by Biały Kruk (2003). From 1998-2000, he lectured at the Jagiellonian University. From 2004-2010, he lectured at Krakowska Szkoła Wyższa. From 2008-2010, he held lectures at film clubs. Author of scripts for the films "Satan Spa" (2012), Głos (2009), co-author of the script for "Room" (2011). He published in "Kino" and "Kwartalnik Filmowy".

    Screenwriter, director, film producer and journalist. Graduate of Journalism at the Political Science faculty of the Jagiellonian University. Author of documentary films (including for the Discovery Channel), video clips and television shows. Affiliated with TVN, for which he made over five hundred funny videos for "Szymon Majewski Show".   • Wojciech Kałużyński

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    Year 1971. A graduate of the Faculty of Polish Philology at the University of Warsaw. Journalist, film critic, film and television screenwriter, columnist. He published, among others in "Kino", "Film", "Świat Film", "Nowa Fantastyka", "Machinie", "Przekrój", "Dziennik", "Bluszcz" and "K-Magu", collaborator of TVP Kultura, Empik's expert. In 2012, he published a book about Zygmunt Kałużyński "Half Life in the Darkness", an album in 2013 - "Cinema, theater, cabaret of the Second Polish Republic", and in 2015 an anecdotic book on eccentrics embellishing the communist everyday life and expanding the space of freedom - "Blue Birds of the PRL" ". An addictive movie watcher and a game lover, a homely nihilist, a wilderness and forest man, an incurable supporter of Polonia Warsaw Team.
  • Andrzej Lichota

    Selection Jury / Animation

    Artist, painter, cartoonist, director, born in 1972 in Libiąż. He creates and lives in Kraków. In 1998, he graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and has a degree in animated film. Author and creator of TeD, and a dozen other cartoon characters. He made his debut in Przekrój – 1998. Since then, he has published over 5,500 drawings in national and foreign dailies and weeklies. He has had his commentator columns which have included: “Polska The Times”, "Polityka", "Dziennik Polski", London's "New Time" - where he also publishes essays. For many years he worked with: “Rzeczpospolita”, "Wprost" and other titles. Author of books and albums. He has made 32 short animated films, including 18 for TVN 7 television’s programme. Winner of prizes at national and international competitions for films and drawings. Holder of scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and Erich Pommer Institut - Berlin. He is actively involved in the work of the Jury of Polish and international film festivals, including: "Reanimacja" - Łódź, ROSHD International Film Festival – Teheran, Mashad, CINEWEST – Sydney.   • Dominika Łapka

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    Born in 1983, graduate of Film Studies at the Jagiellonian University, screenwriting at the National Film School in Łódź and Wajda School. As part of the "30 minut" programme, she made her directorial debut entitled Lila. which has been presented at many international festivals, including 44. Huesca International Film Festival, the 37th Durban International Film Festival, and has won many awards, including the Grand Prix – the Golden Grape at the Lubuskie Film Summer in Łagów, the A.     Film director, producer. Photographer, former local media journalist. Academic lecturer. He specializes in the production of documentaries and independent short films.   • Anita Piotrowska

    Selection Jury / Fiction / Documentary

    Anita Piotrowska is a Tygodnik Powszechny film critic. As a member of the International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI, she was a juror of many film festivals in Poland and abroad. She also works for the Krakow Film Festival as curator of the documentary section. In 2014, she received the Polish Film Institute’s award in the film criticism category.

  • Robert Sowa

    Selection Jury / Animation

    PhD / Assistant professor, associate dean of the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He specializes in animated film, painting, photography. In his films, he uses the language of associations and visual creation. He is also the author of animations for documentary films and multimedia projects combining animation with contemporary music. He collaborates with the Center for Digital Arts & Experimental Media University of Washington in the United States.   • Amelia Wichowicz

    Selection Jury / Documentary

    PhD in film studies, graduate of Polish Studies and Film Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Lecturer at Kraków’s AMA Film Academy. She has also lectured at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts of the Jagiellonian University and at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University. From 2011-2017, editor of the "EKRANy" film studies magazine. Since 2016, she has been editing the film section at the "FRAGILE" cultural quarterly. Head of the press department of the Etiuda&Anima International Film Festival. She has worked with many cultural institutions in Kraków, such as Kino Pod Baranami, the National Museum and Śródmiejski Ośrodek Kultury.
